GOP-Led J6 Investigation To Be Its Own Committee This Congress

GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk revealed that House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to formalize his January 6 investigation into a new committee. This move aligns with Republican efforts to continue past investigations under their control of Congress and the White House.

Loudermilk suggested the committee may be structured to give Johnson greater influence over its operations. His previous work included a report recommending former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney face FBI charges, reinforcing Republican attempts to shield Donald Trump from blame for the Capitol riot. Johnson has pledged full funding for the inquiry.

Republicans are also reviving investigations into President Biden’s classified documents case and Hunter Biden’s tax probe. Meanwhile, Sen. Adam Schiff criticized Biden’s pardons for Jan. 6 investigators, including Liz Cheney and Dr. Anthony Fauci, arguing they could still be compelled to testify under oath. Federal attorney Jesse Binnall noted the pardons prevent them from invoking the Fifth Amendment, increasing legal risks if subpoenaed.
