Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has scheduled a vote to confirm former Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense under President Trump. Despite Senate Democrats presenting an affidavit from Hegseth’s former sister-in-law alleging alcohol abuse and domestic issues, Hegseth’s ex-wife, Samantha Hegseth, has denied the claims of violence.
Thune filed a motion to end debate on the nomination after the Senate Armed Services Committee approved it in a 14-13 party-line vote. A procedural vote is set for Thursday, with a final confirmation expected by Friday or early Saturday.
Republicans, including Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), dismissed the allegations, citing Samantha Hegseth’s denial. Democrats, however, argue the affidavit underscores Hegseth’s unfitness for the role.
The Senate will address Hegseth’s confirmation after voting to confirm former Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) as CIA director earlier Thursday.
