Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, whose district includes Los Angeles, called for higher taxes on the wealthy to fund wildfire relief efforts in California. Waters, a multimillionaire herself, argued that “services cost money,” stressing the need for the richest 1% to pay their fair share. Despite Californians already paying some of the highest taxes in the U.S., she emphasized that this was about ensuring the necessary resources for fighting wildfires and helping those affected. Waters also dismissed the politicization of the issue, urging that, “We all should have heavy hearts… but we should focus on helping those in need,” and underscored the importance of action, regardless of political affiliation.
Meanwhile, Vice President-elect JD Vance responded to claims that the incoming administration might withhold federal aid to California. He clarified that President Trump aims to ensure federal funds are spent efficiently and to improve disaster relief management. Vance expressed deep sympathy for those affected by the wildfires, acknowledging the need for a more competent response to disasters. While Trump may criticize Gov. Gavin Newsom’s handling of the situation, Vance emphasized that “our hearts go out” to Californians, regardless of political affiliation, and stated that better disaster relief is necessary for all Americans.
