Mel Gibson shares sad truth after fire destroys his home

was in Austin, Texas, recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience when the wildfire spread through his Malibu neighborhood, destroying homes, including his $14.5 million mansion. Fortunately, Gibson’s girlfriend, Rosalind Ross, and their seven-year-old son, Lars, evacuated safely before the fire reached their property.

During the podcast, Gibson expressed concern about the growing danger, criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom for a lack of action, remarking, “I think all our tax dollars probably went for Gavin’s hair gel.” Upon returning to California, Gibson confirmed the complete loss of his home, which he purchased in 2008 for $11.5 million. The sprawling mansion, built in 1996, featured a castle-like turret and old-world charm.

Speaking with Elizabeth Vargas Reports, Gibson described the emotional impact of the loss: “I had a lot of personal things there—photographs, files, and sentimental items I can’t get back.” While devastated, he emphasized gratitude for his family’s safety, saying, “These are only things. The good news is that my family is well and safe—that’s all that matters.”

The fire left his neighborhood in ruins, and Gibson noted that other celebrities, such as actor Ed Harris, may have also lost their homes. Properties owned by Paris Hilton and Billy Crystal were reportedly destroyed. Reflecting on the destruction, Gibson described the scene as “a complete burn” and joked about no longer having plumbing problems.

Despite the tragedy, Gibson highlighted California’s ongoing wildfire crisis and criticized leadership, stating, “Kids are traumatized. Someone should answer for it.” The destruction serves as a stark reminder of the worsening impact of wildfires across the state.
