Michelle Obama will not attend President-Elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, according to a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama. Former President Barack Obama, however, is confirmed to attend.
A spokesperson for former President George W. Bush confirmed that he and former First Lady Laura Bush plan to attend. Michelle Obama also skipped the recent funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, which was attended by all living presidents and first ladies.
Michelle Obama, who attended Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, reflected on the experience in her podcast, saying it was emotionally taxing and lacked representation of America’s diversity. She admitted to crying for 30 minutes afterward.
Last week, Barack Obama and Donald Trump were seen having a friendly exchange at the U.S. Capitol, while their spouses, Melania Trump and Laura Bush, sat nearby.

Wonder what Trump said that made Obama laugh so hard
Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines this week after certifying the 2024 election results, affirming Donald Trump’s victory and her defeat in the presidential race.
Harris reportedly has no plans to fade from politics quietly. According to CNN’s Isaac Dovere, she is considering a run for California governor in 2026 or another presidential bid in 2028. She has privately assured supporters that her political career is far from over, saying, “You haven’t seen the last of me.”
Advisers view the California governor’s race as a strong opportunity for Harris, though it could limit her chances to run for president in 2028. Some of her allies believe she deserves another shot at the presidency, while others warn it could be a tough path given the Democratic Party’s current challenges.
Harris has expressed her commitment to “staying in the fight,” but Democratic strategist Theryn Bond has advised against another presidential campaign.
