House Dems Pressed Capitol Police To Give Preferential Treatment to Officer

House Democrats pressured the U.S. Capitol Police to provide special financial aid and a promotion to Lt. Michael Byrd, the officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt during the January 6 riot, according to memos reviewed by Just the News.

The memos reveal that Byrd received tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer and charitable funds, far exceeding what other officers received. Pressure from then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s staff and other Democratic leaders influenced these decisions. Despite this, Byrd continued to demand more assistance, frustrating Capitol Police officials.

Byrd was eventually supported through a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $160,000, promoted by figures like Rep. Eric Swalwell. He also received benefits including enhanced security, housing, and a promotion to captain, despite having a disciplinary record with six referrals to the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, chairing a House subcommittee investigation into the Capitol Police, criticized the unequal treatment and questioned Byrd’s suitability for the force, citing his history and the extraordinary efforts made to support him after January 6.
