Fox & Friends Weekend hosts criticized President Joe Biden for commuting the sentence of Michael T. Conahan, a former judge involved in the notorious “kids for cash” scandal. Conahan, who profited from jailing children in private detention centers, was among 1,500 people whose sentences Biden reduced this week, though he drew the most outrage.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned Biden’s decision as “absolutely wrong.” The White House explained that Conahan qualified for commutation due to serving his sentence under home confinement during COVID-19. Convicted in 2011, Conahan’s 17-year sentence has now ended.
On Fox News, columnist Salena Zito called the case a “profound scandal” and highlighted its devastating impact, including the suicide of a young man sent to detention by Conahan. Sandy Fonzo, the boy’s mother, said her son’s death was a tragic reminder of the judge’s abuse of power.
“This destroyed families,” co-host Carley Shimkus said, calling Conahan’s actions “beyond disgusting.” Co-host Kevin Corke added, “Taking advantage of vulnerable children for money is beyond the pale.”
