President-Elect Donald Trump announced that a government efficiency panel, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, will work to streamline the U.S. government. The panel will issue reports aimed at reducing regulations, cutting spending, and restructuring federal agencies. While dramatic changes are anticipated, Congress ultimately holds the power to implement these recommendations.
PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) — U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that a government efficiency panel, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, will release both individual reports and a major final report on efforts to streamline the U.S. government.
Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump provided the first details on the panel’s work since its announcement earlier in the week. He emphasized that the panel will provide “advice and guidance from outside of government” to help reduce the size of the government, cut regulations, lower spending, and reorganize federal agencies.
Trump’s administration plans to make significant cuts to what he calls the “deep state” — federal employees who, according to Trump, are working against the administration’s agenda. Trump and Musk have hinted at potentially dramatic changes, though it’s important to note that Congress holds the authority over the federal budget. Therefore, lawmakers are not obligated to follow the panel’s recommendations.
In a bid for transparency, Musk announced that the panel will make its proposed actions available for public comment.
